New 2020 Cannabis Decriminalization Law

Beginning on January 11, 2020 a new decriminalization standard for cannabis possession will take effect. Governor Ige did not sign House Bill 1383, but he did not veto it either so the bill will go into effect soon. The bill effectively decriminalizes possession of three grams or less of cannabis and while this is a very low amount compared with other mainland states it’s a good step towards further decriminalization. Once the law goes into effect the penalty for possessing three grams or less of cannabis will be a $130 fine. We applaud the legislature for passing this much needed bill and we thank the Governor for allowing it to become law.
